School History

Built by Thomas Cockram & Co., Brighton Primary School was established in 1875 in the Wilson St. building now known as the Senior School.

Five red brick classrooms were added in 1922 when 1114 attended the school!

The Junior School, which is a classic Federation style building, was built in 1910. The building comprises seven classrooms around a central assembly hall.  A two room Bristol unit was erected during the 1950s and in 1996, three portable classrooms were added.

Two brick shelter sheds were built as Memorial Pavilions after the First World War. They have since been expanded and converted to Music and Art facilities.

In 1990 a new red brick library was built and was named the Paula Barry Library after a former principal who strove persistently to gain the valuable facility.

The domed structure in the front garden was originally built as a Bell Tower by the old Scholars' Association to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the school and sixty years later the Bell Tower has been incorporated into our School Logo to form a symbolic link between the school’s past and future.

A time capsule is sealed in the base of this structure as a memento of the State’s 150th Anniversary in 1985.  It will be opened in 2035.

Following the adoption of a school master plan in 1999 significant facilities development has resulted in the addition of new playgrounds, classrooms and toilets.  The major up-grade has also seen the refurbishment of the administration area and a number of classrooms. Development of a science and technology centre and a centre for the hearing impaired.

A large Community Centre has been built and many rooms have new heating and air-conditioning.

Recently completed is the new surfacing of the junior oval with synthetic grass.
