Our Learning Philosophy

At Brighton Primary School, we take great pride in our distinctive learning philosophy, carefully crafted to foster a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child.

Our skilled teachers, who are always on the pulse of best practice and educational research, ensure that each child is guided on a trajectory of learning towards deep understanding. We believe in using both explicit instruction to learn the fundamentals in English and Mathematics, as well as inquiry-based learning to ignite our students' passion, supporting their growth into active, informed citizens.

Beyond academics, we prioritise creating a nurturing community that cultivates a sense of belonging among our students. Organising the Victorian Curriculum through the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Programme framework, we emphasise global perspectives, preparing our young learners for a world of opportunities.

English & Mathematics

Building strong foundations in English and Mathematics is the bedrock of academic success at Brighton Primary School. These fundamental skills not only empower students to navigate the complexities of language and numbers, but also serve as the cornerstone for future learning and critical thinking.

Guided by the latest research in the science of language and reading, our approach to teaching students to read and write is highly structured and supportive. A typical reading session will focus on the 5 areas of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Writing sessions include a balance of teaching the mechanics of writing – spelling, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation - while also giving our young writers the chance to work through the drafting and writing process, finding their voice as a writer. Opportunities to conference in small groups and one-on-one sessions with the teacher offers students tailored feedback to improve.

In Mathematics, our daily review of number facts, combined with the development of big ideas, numeracy proficiencies, and problem-solving skills, ensures that students not only grasp mathematical concepts but also apply them with confidence. Our goal is to equip students with a solid foundation in mathematics, preparing them for success in both academic and real-world challenges.

Science & The Humanities

The integration of science and the humanities is seamlessly woven into our curriculum through the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Programme (PYP) units of inquiry. These units allow students to explore scientific concepts and dive into the richness of the humanities within a unified framework.

Through hands-on experiments, research projects, and immersive experiences, students investigate the interconnectedness of the natural world and human societies. This approach not only fosters a deep understanding of scientific principles and cultural perspectives, but also nurtures the development of critical thinking, inquiry skills, and a genuine appreciation for the wonders of the world.
